John Summit
The Accountant Who Became House Music's Biggest Name
John Summit's story is not your typical DJ origin tale. Born John Schuster in Chicago in 1994, he spent his early twenties juggling accounting work at Ernst & Young with late-night DJ sets at college bars in Illinois — sneaking house music into the last fifteen minutes of sets otherwise filled with Top 40. After quitting his job in 2019 and grinding through the pandemic with relentless studio sessions, he sent his track "Deep End" to Defected Records in a single all-nighter. It became the longest-running number one on Beatport that year and launched one of the most meteoric rises in recent electronic music history.
Since then the momentum has barely paused: "Human", "La Danza", "Where You Are" with HAYLA — a track that made Barack Obama's favourite songs of the year list — and "Shiver" have all become fixtures of dance floors worldwide. His debut album Comfort in Chaos debuted at number two on the Billboard Top Dance/Electronic Albums chart in 2024, and his second album Ctrl Escape is due in April 2026. He also runs Experts Only, his own label and events brand, named SiriusXM's Powertools Label of the Year for 2025. Rolling Stone called him the hottest name in dance music. Hard to argue.
