Twenty-Five Years of Trance and Still Setting the Agenda
Born on Christmas Day 1976 in Leiden, the Netherlands, Armin van Buuren discovered dance music through mixtapes and radio shows as a teenager and never looked back. By 1996 he was playing six-hour sets at local clubs, and by 2001 he had launched A State of Trance — a weekly radio show that now reaches 44 million listeners across more than 100 stations in 84 countries, making it one of the most-listened-to dance music programmes on the planet. He also co-founded Armada Music, five times winner of the International Dance Music Award for Best Global Record Label.
His discography tells the story of a man who has never stood still: from the early classic "Blue Fear" to the Grammy-nominated "This Is What It Feels Like" with Trevor Guthrie, through albums like Imagine, Mirage, Balance and his latest Breathe. He has collaborated with Tiësto, Above & Beyond, Ariana Grande, Dua Lipa, Martin Garrix and many others. Five DJ Mag Number 1 titles — four of them consecutive — alongside 27 International Dance Music Awards and 12 DJ Awards cement his place as the most decorated trance DJ in history. In 2026, A State of Trance celebrates its 25th anniversary, and there is nowhere more fitting to mark it than Ibiza.
