Opening in September 2003, Carling Academy Islington is situated in the heart of fashionable Islington, a 17,000 square foot purpose built venue, with a capacity of 800. Carling Academy 2 Islington is the adjoining smaller space re-designed as a stand alone venue showcasing hot up-and-coming bands (capacity 250) and easily converts to an extra room for club nights. It is the McKenzie Group's seventh concert venue and third site in London, and an ambition realised for MKG MD John Northcote to capture acts of all sizes and stages in the Capital. Carling Academy Islington fits perfectly alongside MKG's flagship South London venue; Carling Academy Brixton (capacity 4,720) and the historic Shepherds Bush Empire (capacity 2,000) in West London.
Now under McKenzie Group ownership, Carling Academy Islington was formerly the Marquee in the N1 Centre. This purpose-built, digitally enabled live music venue will now feature a superb diary of events all year round from internationally acclaimed artists. Over the years, MKG venues across the UK have welcomed shows from world class acts including The Who, Elton John, Rolling Stones, David Bowie, Madonna, Oasis, Coldplay, Prince, REM, Prodigy, Kylie, Foo Fighters, The Strokes and many more!
Carling Academy Islington is also suitable for filming, audio recording with superb production and back stage facilities. The VIP / mezzanine bar overlooks the main stage and dance floor and is available for private hire, special functions and as a VIP facility. The interior is clean and contemporary, fully air-conditioned, has unobstructed sightlines, and situated in an excellent location for transport networks.
McKenzie Group have added more bars so you can spend less time waiting for a beer, and more time doing the most important thing - watching your favourite bands, fitted a replacement wooden floor, large capacity cloakrooms, an operational box office and improved logistics backstage to the highest standards. Digital cameras will beam the sights and sounds from the main auditorium to plasma screens in Carling Academy 2 Islington and up to the mezzanine level, so there's no chance of missing a moment. "It's always preferable when famous rock venues fall into the hands of those with vinyl in their veins - like those behind the McKenzie Group Ltd perhaps" - The Stage (27th March 2003)
Sound and lighting facilities are state of the art, and most importantly the venue is incredibly flexible, whether you are a production company filming a band, an avid new music spotter on the unsigned London scene, a music fan with a passion for rock bands or a dedicated clubber; Carling Academy Islington has something for everyone
