Few if any London clubs can rival the Fridge's outlaw heritage. Founder Andrew Czezowski opened the first incarnation of the club in south London's Brixton shortly after the riots of 1981. Ex-manager of the Damned and possessor of numerous other punk credentials, Czezowski also claims to have invented the concept of the chill out area.

Indisputably the Fridge hosted the first gigs of the Pet Shop Boys and Bronski Beat and was a centre for the New Romantic movement.

The Fridge's increasing popularity demanded an upsizing and in 1985 it moved to its current 1100 capacity venue on Town Hall Parade. Gay night Love Muscle (a euphemism for penis, just to ram the point home) pushed buttons and boundaries. The Fridge rode the explosion of rave in the 90s by becoming the home for long-running trance nights Escape from Samsara, Return to the Source and Pendragon.

This style of energetic entertainment continues to predominate in the 21st Century. In these modern times Fridge tries hard to stay on the safer side of notorious, with mixed success.
